about

LOMA005

Dryfall represents an expanded notion of Andrew Weathers’ Land Ethic series, an ongoing project that weaves together audio journal with reimaginings of place. The single piece is composed entirely of materials recorded on a work trip to California through the San Francisco Bay Area and Death Valley National Park.

Accompanied by prepared guitar and synthesizer and haunted by free jazz, the thrust of Dryfall is anchored by long recordings of interiors and exteriors: the downtown Berkeley BART station, a lightwell at Weathers’ hotel, charcoal kilns in Death Valley, and Badwater Basin, a salt creek at the lowest point in North America. The resulting sonic assemblage traces the places where Weathers trod while transforming the component audio elements into a wholly new acoustic space.

--------

Andrew Weathers is a composer and improviser originally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and currently based in Littlefield, Texas. His work engages with notions of place, tradition, repetition, and spirit, splitting the difference between folk music and land art. Weathers studied composition at the University of North Carolina–Greensboro and electronic music at Mills College in Oakland, California.

A consistent presence in the underground music scene over the past decade, Weathers’ work covers a wide spectrum from solo acoustic guitar to electronic noise. He also performs and records regularly with Tethers, Real Life Rock & Roll Band, Tender Crust, Wind Tide, Satin Spar, Llano Estacado Monad Band and in long-running collaborations with Seth Chrisman and tanner menard, among others. In addition to his busy performing schedule, Weathers operates the Full Spectrum and Other Minds record labels, curates the Longitudes music series at CO-OPt Research + Projects in Lubbock, Texas, and works as a freelance mixing and mastering engineer.
