Dryfall represents an expanded notion of Andrew Weathers’ Land Ethic series, an ongoing project that weaves together audio journal with reimaginings of place. The single piece is composed entirely of materials recorded on a work trip to California through the San Francisco Bay Area and Death Valley National Park.
Accompanied by prepared guitar and synthesizer and haunted by free jazz, the thrust of Dryfall is anchored by long recordings of interiors and exteriors: the downtown Berkeley BART station, a lightwell at Weathers’ hotel, charcoal kilns in Death Valley, and Badwater Basin, a salt creek at the lowest point in North America. The resulting sonic assemblage traces the places where Weathers trod while transforming the component audio elements into a wholly new acoustic space.

My humanities professor showed me this piece and i cannot stop coming back to it. Something deep and alluring of this piece keeps me wanting more. Absolutely one of my favorite cuts from last year. Ra!
The electrified A-side is dominated by various effects paired with amplified, processed, and distorted vocals that resemble the sound of a brass instrument in a hall full of reverb. The B-side is strictly acoustic: the delicate sound of the instruments and the unusual timbre of Kidambi’s voice offer a surprising dialogue, both in the sacred and dignified chants and the ripping, ecstatic articulations.
